The end of the school year can be an incredible whirlwind, as any parent or teacher can testify. We finished our school year at a breakneck pace, seemingly stuffing the maximum amount of learning and fun into each of our final weeks. From the Fun Run in late April through Field Day on the last day of school, here's a quick overview of some of the fun things we've been doing at WCS.
Fun Run
This year's spring fundraiser was a Fun Run powered by Boosterthon. The theme of the campaign was "Castle Quest," and our staff made it come alive through door decorations and by incorporating the theme into the curriculum. Our students did an amazing job getting pledges from family and friends, while our Fun Run committee procured corporate sponsorships from local businesses. The dazzling "glow run" itself was held in the gym. We profited over $40,000 from this fundraiser, and the students had a great time running their laps to benefit the school.
Spring Music Programs
Our students were able to showcase their musical talents at the Elementary Spring Program on April 28th and the Middle School Spring Program on May 17th. The theme of the elementary program was "The Armor of God," and students wore handmade pieces of armor they had made in art class. The program featured various instruments, dances, scriptures, and a number of songs to support the theme.
Picnic and Color War
A valuable time of fellowship and fun was had at our annual school picnic on Friday, May 18th. We normally have the picnic at an outside venue, but thanks to the hard work of PTF President Kate Still, we were able to host it at our school. Inflatables, gaga ball, 9-square, face painting, and a middle school color war were some of the highlights from the evening.
Middle School Trips
Every spring, our students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades pack their suitcases for some amazing educational trips. This year, the sixth grade "Outdoor Ed" was held at Camp Buckeye in Beach City, Ohio. Nature discovery, team building, and more were all on the agenda. The seventh and eight graders headed to Pennsylvania on a trip that included a tour of Gettysburg as well as a show at the Sight and Sound theater in Lancaster.
Mini Maker Faire
The WCS Art Club partnered with the STEAM Club to put together an interactive booth for the Mini Maker Faire, hosted by Wayne College on May 19th. Our booth had a sand art pendulum, upcycled bird house make-and-take, and 3-D art display. The most prominent feature of the display was "Sherbet," a giant papier-mâché dragon sculpture created by Mrs. Kirby and her art students. Special thanks to Mrs. Kirby and Mrs. Schmidle for representing our school at the faire!
Field Day
Our last day of school is always Field Day at WCS. Our first Field Day at our new location consisted of several fun activities and games for the students in grades K-6. A definite highlight of the day was a huge slip-n-slide which our fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Bohley, set up on one of the property's huge hills. The day was a perfect send-off to summer.
